If You're In the UK or EU, Here's How to Object to Meta's AI Training
Users in the UK and EU can submit a form in the Instagram Privacy Center to object to Meta using their content for AI training. Earlier this month Meta updated the commercial terms for business accounts to allow content from associated domains, web pages and URLs to be used to develop, improve, research and train its products, originally due to take effect on October 30 and postponed to November 20 amid backlash; according to Nieman Lab, Meta subsequently removed the word train from the list of permitted uses and limited the uses to advertising and business products. Personal data of UK and EU users is protected by the GDPR and the AI Act, including the right to object to use of their data and to withdraw consent at any time, and users have shared steps and received emails from Meta approving their objections. The author used a VPN to set their IP location to London and Belgium and tested it, and could see the objection option, but on submission got an error page saying the form is only open to specific regions, and has asked Meta for clarification; these steps do not apply outside the UK and EU.
