Meta says controversial new commercial terms may again be delayed
Meta says it’ll probably delay its controversial new business terms again
Meta says that, due to publisher opposition, the effective date of its new commercial terms may be delayed until after November 20, or even indefinitely. Meta communications head Andy Stone said on X that the company will not change policy before fully consulting with industry groups and leaders; if consultations extend beyond November 20, implementation of the new terms will be delayed, and the existing terms will remain in effect until then. The new terms were originally set to take effect on October 30 and initially appeared to allow Meta to use content from news sites on Facebook and Instagram to train AI models; Meta has since removed wording related to "training," but legal experts told Nieman Lab that the changes are still not enough to rule out that possibility. In addition to opposition from the News/Media Alliance, Senator Marsha Blackburn said the new terms show Meta is trying to exploit American creators and businesses, and Senator Adam Schiff urged Meta to withdraw the change.
