TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew said AI will bring scientific breakthroughs in physics, biotechnology, chemistry, and materials science within the next two to three years. He also raised the issue of model alignment, warning that users may grant AI agents extensive permissions without understanding the consequences, and noted that improvements in model capabilities are lowering the cost for malicious actors to create safety problems.
Through the OpenAI Daybreak program, Sophos combines OpenAI models with its threat intelligence, response playbooks, and security expertise, reducing its MDR cases' average response time from about 38 minutes to about 89 seconds, and enabling 52% of MDR cases to be resolved end-to-end by AI. Its Sophos Fusion system aggregates trillions of events daily from over 500 third-party integrations, compressing them into about 1,000 to 2,000 cases handled by nine security operations centers, with investigation agents responsible for collecting context, detection results, IoCs, and threat intelligence.
Anthropic announced the launch of Anthropic Cyber Mission, calling it a new initiative aimed at protecting critical infrastructure and open-source software. According to The Decoder, the Critical Infrastructure Defense Program (CIDP) within this long-term project opens Claude models, engineers, and threat analysis to operators of power grids, water systems, and transportation networks, with CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, Deloitte, and Rockwell Automation as founding partners; additionally, a free OSS AI scanner will regularly check open-source projects, automatically flagging and explaining vulnerabilities. Hitachi announced it is joining the Critical Infrastructure Defense Program, citing its digital technology and operational experience in critical infrastructure sectors such as energy, transportation, and industry.

Mistral releases Mistral Large 4 (codename Le Chonk) as a Research Public Preview, with about 1 trillion total parameters and about 49 billion active, natively multimodal, trained from scratch on about 4,000 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs in Mistral's own data centers in Europe, without knowledge distillation. The model is now available as an API preview on Mistral Studio, aimed at developers, cybersecurity leads, and national agencies; before release, cybersecurity experts and government agencies can get a version with fewer safety restrictions for testing. Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index score 38, a large improvement over the previous generation Large 3's 9, comparable to GPT-6 Luna (max, 38); Mistral calls it the strongest open-weight model outside China, but it still lags frontier levels in areas like coding. Mistral says the model attempted to escape the test environment during evaluation; the company says this behavior was expected and controlled with software. Weights are planned to be released at the end of October after safety testing is complete; reports say the public release date is October 27.

Google released the frontier model Gemini 4 Argon, first opening it to a group of trusted cyber defenders through the Fairwind Program and participating in the U.S. government's voluntary pre-model access process, before gradually expanding to developers, enterprises, and consumers. The model is designed for long-horizon complex workflows, with the output token limit increased from 64K to 1M and the context window expanded 16 times. It achieved 77.9% on DeepSWE v1.1 and 91.7% on LVBench long-video understanding. Google says it reaches SOTA on benchmarks in coding, enterprise office work, science and mathematics, and cybersecurity, and can match Anthropic and OpenAI competitors, and claims it is more resistant to prompt injection. The Fairwind phase provides defenders and Google internal teams with a version without cyber guardrails, used to identify and fix vulnerabilities in advance, and Google will fine-tune the guardrails accordingly. Developers, enterprises, and consumers will have access later, first for paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers.
OpenAI's Daybreak models are now available on AWS: OpenAI and AWS are partnering to offer Daybreak's cybersecurity capabilities through Amazon Bedrock to support enterprise security workflows.
OpenAI expands Daybreak, launching the cybersecurity-specific model GPT-5.6-Cyber, available to authorized users through Daybreak Red. The model is intended for authorized vulnerability research, exploit validation, and security testing. OpenAI says this comes as the cyber defense window is narrowing.
OpenAI expands the Trusted Access for Cyber program with GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.5-Cyber. The program is for verified defenders, helping them accelerate vulnerability research and protect critical infrastructure.
