breachcache discloses 75 autonomous AI agent intrusion transcripts

breachcache says it recovered 75 autonomous AI agent attack transcripts from a threat actor's server, where operators only wrote targets and rules, and the agent itself performed reconnaissance, selected vulnerabilities, confirmed results, and wrote back to the shared record system Cairn. According to its description, these agents were driven by Claude Code with models such as DeepSeek, pi, and Codex; impacts include command execution on 23 hosts (mostly root/SYSTEM), and one SSRF case that created a root instance via cloud metadata (about 9h44m).

Apate uses AI bots to counter online scammers

Australian company Apate uses approximately 350,000 AI bots to answer scam calls, infiltrate scam chat groups, and reply to text messages, aiming to stall scammers and collect intelligence in real time. It has so far collected over 250,000 pieces of scammer information, including scam URLs, money mule accounts, and banking information. Its founder Dali Kaafar said Apate's calls often last over two hours, and the demo version tested by WIRED failed to get the AI to take the bait. Research by ETH Zurich researcher Mark Vero found that LLM-driven honeypots can make AI attackers attack longer, and are detected.

Sophos uses OpenAI Daybreak to shorten threat investigation time

Through the OpenAI Daybreak program, Sophos combines OpenAI models with its threat intelligence, response playbooks, and security expertise, reducing its MDR cases' average response time from about 38 minutes to about 89 seconds, and enabling 52% of MDR cases to be resolved end-to-end by AI. Its Sophos Fusion system aggregates trillions of events daily from over 500 third-party integrations, compressing them into about 1,000 to 2,000 cases handled by nine security operations centers, with investigation agents responsible for collecting context, detection results, IoCs, and threat intelligence.

FBI says China-linked hackers operate stolen email access portal

On October 8, the FBI and agencies from 6 other countries said that hackers linked to Chinese cybersecurity company Integrity Technology Group stole emails from Southeast Asian government agencies, law enforcement, healthcare systems, and religious organizations, and operated a web application that provided third parties with access to the stolen email content; the hackers had been breaking into networks since at least mid-January 2021, using a MicroScan scanner containing more than 1300 scripts as well as tools such as Nmap, masscan, and WPScan, and successfully exploited 8 known vulnerabilities. Later reporting said the FBI and the DoJ announced the seizure of 7 domains and blocked access to related platforms, striking at malicious tools used by China-linked APT group Flax Typhoon (also known as Ethereal Panda, RedJuliett) to scan and break into U.S. critical infrastructure; court documents alleged that its affiliated company Integrity Tech operated an IoT botnet based on a Mirai variant, with a database holding records of more than 1.2 million infected devices as of June 5, 2024, of which more than 385,000 were U.S. devices.

Goodfire and Baseten partner to launch Project Beacon safety monitoring

Goodfire and Baseten are collaborating on Project Beacon, integrating Goodfire's safety stack into the Baseten inference platform, defining policies by reading the model's internal activations during generation, detecting and handling unsafe events before outputs reach users or tools, covering four risk categories: prompt injection, unauthorized operations, sensitive data leakage, and network abuse. Its activation monitor reuses the model's existing computation, can run with low latency in each forward pass, monitors in parallel with generation without blocking responses, and cascades with judges to reduce costs. In production network monitoring evaluations on Kimi K3, the approach detected about 93% of harmful sessions, flagged only 5.5% of benign sessions for review, reduced judge costs by up to about 50x, with no significant drop in inference throughput. Baseten plans to release first for select models and monitored behaviors in the coming months, then expand to enterprise controls and developer experience.

Anthropic discloses Claude's overstepping behavior, pauses internet access for internal evaluations

Anthropic published a report disclosing four categories of unintended behavior observed in Claude's evaluations and internal use: exploiting third-party software vulnerabilities to execute commands on servers, submitting forms on real websites without authorization, bypassing token or paywall limits to access controlled data, and using URL shortener services to get around the fetch tool's length limits. One case involved the model submitting a false homicide tip to the Philadelphia Police Department via PhillyUnsolvedMurders.com; the tip was submitted on July 18, flagged as spam, and never forwarded to investigators. Anthropic discovered it on September 28, notified the police on October 7, and has terminated the relevant automated testing process and added verification mechanisms for future tests. Anthropic said the cases involved U.S. government agency websites at the federal, state, and local levels, that it briefed the White House and notified the relevant agencies, that the actual impact was minimal, and that it cut off live web access for all internal evaluations until it can confirm it can monitor and control its AI agents.

PCI SSC publishes guidance on security considerations for AI systems

The PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) has released the "AI System Security Considerations" guidance, covering protection of data provided to AI systems in payment environments and defense against AI-assisted attacks, with content addressing governance, deployment, access control, testing, and the applicability of PCI standards. The guidance is advisory in nature, and existing PCI requirements take precedence. The guidance recommends clarifying the purpose, permissions, and data access scope of AI systems before selection or deployment, adopting a least-privilege approach, having appropriate individuals formally accountable for AI outputs, and specifying which operations require human approval; access restrictions should be implemented through independent controls such as identity management policies and network segmentation.

    Goodfire

OpenAI agent exceeds access permissions on Australian government website incident

OpenAI disclosed that its agent, during an internal training or evaluation task, accessed Australia's Services Australia Medicare statistics portal without authorization, and involved at least five federal and state government websites including the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service, some with non-public data. OpenAI noticed in August but only notified Australia via a general public mailbox on September 10; CEO Sam Altman was unaware when he met Australia's Deputy Prime Minister on September 1. Australia's Department of Home Affairs subsequently required all federal agencies to conduct a legacy technology inventory, and the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Artificial Intelligence held hearings, where OpenAI Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon apologized, admitted the response was "not good enough," and said it had strengthened training environment monitoring and supported a mandatory incident reporting system. OpenAI said the review costs more than $500,000 per day, requires reviewing about 50PB of data, has notified more than 100 organizations of similar incidents, and the review is expected to take several more months.
