Can AI agents align with human rights?(original, opens in a new tab)

In a policy review, Google researchers argue that international human rights law such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights could be turned into alignment objectives during the training phase, so that AI agents consider impacts on people beyond the direct user before deployment. Their newly released paper uses Gemini-2.5-Flash and GPT-5-mini as automated scorers to compare their own human rights taxonomy with the AIR 2024 risk taxonomy, which aggregates 8 government policies and 16 corporate guidelines, across 100 simulated agent failure scenarios. Using the example of a patent search agent missing prior art in a Japanese manual, AIR 2024 suggests adding a disclaimer from a corporate responsibility perspective, while the human rights framework points to the impact of restrictive patents on the right to health and access to medicines. The authors also propose three follow-up research directions, including a safety benchmark for measuring downstream human rights impacts, conflict resolution rules for handling rights conflicts, and involving human rights law experts and civil society in the design of alignment tools.

The Google Earth AI controversy highlights why tech companies must listen to outside experts(original, opens in a new tab)

Google announced a Google Earth update on Thursday allowing users to transform real places with the Nano Banana image generation capability, then rolled the feature back on Friday after public opposition, saying it would implement stronger guardrails. The authors at WITNESS note in the piece that Google Earth has for over two decades provided journalists, human rights investigators, open source researchers, and courts with a stable, timestamped record of reality and is part of the global verification infrastructure, and that adding generative image capabilities blurs the boundary between recording reality and generating reality. The authors say their 2024 report already warned of the risk of synthetic evidence of military operations and humanitarian crises, and cite the example of fabricated images of a destroyed US military base, based on real Google Earth satellite imagery, that spread widely during the Iran-Israel-US war and received hundreds of thousands of views before being debunked by BBC Verify and others. The authors argue that the biggest risk is the normalization of environmental uncertainty, and that the content restrictions Google initially emphasized, such as SynthID watermarking, are not a substitute for pre-deployment risk assessment and consultation with civil society experts.

Google's AI governance proposal draws the line for what counts as harm(original, opens in a new tab)

A Tech Policy Press article analyzes Google's governance document "A Pragmatic Approach to AI Governance in America," released in June 2026, and argues that it divides AI harms into two categories: frontier national security and public safety risks are assigned to a new agency, FARO, while everyday harms such as chatbots and automated decision-making are left to existing consumer, employment, privacy, and copyright law, thereby drawing the line for regulatory priorities. The article says FARO is funded by industry, overseen by federal agencies, and governed jointly by independent and industry representatives, and is responsible for setting safety standards and reviewing audits before frontier models are released, drawing in part on Google DeepMind's Frontier Safety Framework; Google also supports federal government early access to models with national security capabilities and argues that other countries should recognize FARO's approval outcomes through regulatory mutual recognition.

Agent browser security: 2025 year-end review(original, opens in a new tab)

Wiz Research published its 2025 year-end review, summarizing multiple prompt injection and data exfiltration studies that surfaced in agent browsers over the year, and compiling vendors' security configurations. The review listed attacks including Johann Rehberger's zero-interaction exfiltration, Guardio Labs testing Perplexity Comet with fake stores and phishing links, Brave's disclosure of indirect prompt injection in Comet, and disclosures by Tenable, LayerX, Cato Networks, and Google researchers targeting products such as Comet, Atlas, and Operator, involving URL parameter hijacking, long-term memory poisoning, and task injection. On the defense side, vendors shifted from asking before actions to multi-layer architectures, with human-in-the-loop becoming a common guardrail; differences lay in reinforcement learning, architectural isolation, and secondary LLM review. The article offered three recommendations: isolate context, retain human confirmation, and limit agents to handling only low-risk tasks.

Teaching AI to see the world like humans(original, opens in a new tab)

Google DeepMind published research in Nature proposing a method to make the internal representations of vision models closer to human knowledge hierarchies, and claims that aligned models are more robust and generalize better. The research uses the cognitive science odd-one-out task to compare human and model judgments, finding that models often rely on surface features such as background color and texture, leading to choices different from humans. The method has three steps: on the pre-trained vision model SigLIP-SO400M, freeze the backbone, train a small adapter on the THINGS dataset as a teacher, generate the AligNet dataset containing millions of images and millions of human-like judgments, then fine-tune the student model accordingly. Aligned models more often agree with human judgments on cognitive science tasks such as odd-one-out and multi-arrangement, and also perform better on few-shot learning and distribution shift.

Why it was selectedThe paper uses the cognitive science odd-one-out task to quantify differences in representation between vision models and humans, and provides a three-step alignment method: freezing the backbone, generating a dataset, then fine-tuning.

BIDMC and Google conduct the first real-world study evaluating the safety of patient-facing medical AI(original, opens in a new tab)

BIDMC and Google researchers published a study in The Lancet evaluating the real-world safety of the medical AI chatbot AMIE in primary care. Between April and November 2025, 114 patients used AMIE from home through a secure text interface after scheduling an appointment with a BIDMC physician, and 98 of them completed the AI interaction and clinic visit. Each conversation was monitored in real time by an internal medicine specialist, who could intervene if the patient faced risk of harm, showed obvious emotional distress, or asked to end the session; none of the 98 completed conversations triggered a safety stop, and the supervising physicians found 1 case of hallucination and added clinical notes in 5 cases. Patients gave high ratings for listening, explaining information, and putting them at ease, but still had concerns about the confidentiality of information and the chatbot's honesty and trustworthiness. In 44 cases, physicians reviewed AI-generated notes or summaries before the visit; 75% of them said it helped prepare for the visit, and 57% said it may have influenced their clinical thinking; only 1 case was reported as causing some harm, because AMIE listed lymphoma as a possible diagnosis and the physician worried the patient would become anxious about it.

A KFF Health News investigation found that representatives from tech companies including Microsoft, Anthropic, OpenAI, Apple, and Google participated in shaping federal AI healthcare regulation policy through a chat room that CMS established on Slack. The chat room has grown to 1,700 members, but only a few patient advocates and doctors participate. In video conferences, CMS officials promised tech companies that the Medicare App Library would become a sales channel for health apps and hinted that these apps would be prioritized for inclusion in a new program that reimburses AI services under Medicare. Tech companies also lobbied on Slack for health apps to have unlimited access to patient medical records in the TEFCA network after a one-time user authorization. Legal experts note that the chat room somewhat resembles a federal advisory committee, but CMS's code of conduct explicitly denies that it constitutes an advisory committee.
