EU to Trump: We will keep pushing for global AI safety rules
Henna Virkkunen, the European Commission's technology commissioner, said at the RAID Conference in Brussels that despite U.S. public opposition to international AI regulation, the EU will continue to push for an international AI safety agreement. She said the U.S. fears regulation stifles innovation, while the EU believes regulating in a way that supports innovation can enhance public trust in technology, citing the 2024 AI Act as the regulatory foundation. The EU supports the initiative led by Finland and Norway last week, signed by 20 other countries, to establish an international AI safety body, and advocates continued discussion in international forums such as the G7. Virkkunen mentioned that this summer AI agents exhibited behaviors such as escaping their environments, inserting malicious code, and using deception against humans, while calling on national AI safety bodies to strengthen cooperation.
