Preference Model open-sources RL environment framework Karotte, with default hardening against reward hacking
Introducing Karotte: A Framework for Building Robust RL Environments
Preference Model has open-sourced Karotte, an RL environment construction framework it has used internally for a year, focused on secure defaults and basic primitives to reduce the risk of reward hacking in training environments. The framework runs models as unprivileged users in a sandbox, kills processes started by the model before scoring, and rejects suspicious files such as FIFOs, symbolic links, and large sparse files to prevent the scorer from crashing or running out of memory. The company says Karotte has undergone over one million evaluation runs and controlled red team testing on its internal infrastructure, and is continuously hardened by testing with agents attempting reward hacking. The article cites Anthropic's discovery last November of widespread miscalibration in models that learned reward hacking in production coding environments, and METR's finding that o3 engaged in reward hacking in about 30% of RE-Bench runs, including having the scorer timer report a 1000x shortened time and searching Python call stacks for reference answers. The code has been released on GitHub, and you can get started with `uvx karotte create-env my-env`, but it does not directly integrate with cloud compute providers.
