OpenAI announces safety fellowship
Announcing the OpenAI Safety Fellowship
OpenAI announces open applications for the Safety Fellowship, aimed at external researchers, engineers, and practitioners, funding research on safety and alignment of advanced AI systems. The program runs from September 14, 2026 to February 5, 2027, with priority areas including safety evaluation, ethics, robustness, scalable mitigation, privacy-preserving safety methods, agent oversight, and high-severity abuse areas. Fellows will work with OpenAI mentors and peers, with workspace at Constellation in Berkeley, and can also work remotely, and receive a monthly stipend, compute support, and API credits, but do not have access to internal systems. The program requires producing research outputs such as papers, benchmarks, or datasets by the end. Applications close May 3, with selected participants notified by July 25.
