Anthropic's IPO Prospectus Tells Both the Promise and the Peril of AI
Anthropic’s IPO pitch embraces AI’s promise and peril
Reuters, after reviewing Anthropic's roughly 300-page IPO prospectus, reports that the company plans what could be the largest IPO in history, targeting a $2 trillion valuation, with nearly a third of the prospectus devoted to listing various risk factors, more than twice the space describing its business. The prospectus says AI could greatly improve quality of life and transform the global economy, but could also pose catastrophic or existential risks to humanity; the company proposes achieving AI safety through more powerful, more concentrated power, while warning that concentration of power itself is a threat, and asks investors to trust the control of the company by its seven founders. The filing discloses that the company lost more than $50 billion over the two years through 2025, with future spending commitments exceeding $500 billion; in 2025, 47% of revenue came from big tech partners including Amazon, Alphabet's Google, Broadcom, and Microsoft, which may also restrict or directly compete with it. Anthropic did not respond to requests for comment.
