OpenAI appoints Dan Driscoll as Senior Counselor for National Security Modernization
OpenAI has appointed former U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll as its newly created senior advisor for national security modernization; he will work with company leadership and external partners to advise on how advanced AI can strengthen national and cybersecurity, with a focus on working with U.S. allies to promote responsible use. The role will involve collaborating with government, industry, academia and allied institutions to advance modernization initiatives that support the building of democratic AI, and to help OpenAI's internal teams understand the operational needs of national security institutions worldwide. Dan Driscoll served as the 26th U.S. Army Secretary, responsible for the operations, modernization and resource allocation of nearly 1 million active-duty, National Guard and Reserve soldiers and more than 265,000 Army civilian personnel, and previously had military officer service, legal and private-sector experience. OpenAI said the appointment reflects its commitment to helping democratic institutions use advanced AI responsibly, and continues its work under the Daybreak project to strengthen cyber resilience with allies and protect critical services.
