Anthropic grants external AI oversight body METR employee-level access
Anthropic gives outside AI watchdog “employee-like” access
Anthropic hosts 6 METR employees, providing company hardware, office space, and access to internal tools and systems roughly at the same level as its internal risk assessment team. Anthropic does not pay METR, and METR does not accept donations from AI companies or their employees; its funding comes from individuals, philanthropic organizations, and government bodies such as the UK AI Security Institute. Evaluators may publish their analyses on their own, and Anthropic has no right of veto, but may request redactions of content such as customer data, information covered by attorney-client privilege, and model architecture. Anthropic describes this as voluntary embedding of evaluators and believes every frontier AI company should do the same; METR says it is willing to work with all frontier AI developers. Anthropic is also presenting its safety practices to investors, with its IPO expected this year at a valuation exceeding $2tn; the company is also partnering with Accenture, with each committing at least $1 billion to establish new guardrails, while SecureBio is responsible for reviewing chemical and biological weapons risks.
Anthropic gives six METR employees access close to that of its internal risk assessment team, providing a reference for how third-party evaluators can embed in labs.
