‘Pull the plug’: protesters resort to direct action against AI firms
The anti-AI protest group Pull The Plug disrupted a tech industry dinner attended by Nvidia executives at a hotel in London, with members unfurling banners and chanting slogans, and video was uploaded to Instagram. The group was founded in January this year, has about 300 members, advocates direct action, and is funded by an anonymous AI industry insider. PauseAI has branches in 17 countries worldwide, and its volunteer sign-ups doubled to about 100 per week after an OpenAI agent-related incident in August, rose to 681 in the week after Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon issued a warning, and organized protests in Paris, London, and Berlin. The Scottish charity Action to Protect Rural Scotland saw supporters grow from 400 to 4,000, opposing at least 21 local data center construction plans.
