White House issues executive order changing AI in federal government terminology to Super Intelligence
Inaugurating The Era Of Super Intelligence
The White House issued an executive order requiring U.S. executive branch agencies to replace “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” with “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in official correspondence, public communications, websites, reports and policy documents, and not to recognize the usage of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” in relevant contexts. The executive order states that the capabilities of current frontier systems go beyond merely imitating or automating parts of human intelligence, that the new term better reflects their capabilities, and emphasizes that this renaming is U.S. government policy. On definitions, Super Intelligence temporarily follows the definition of artificial intelligence in 15 U.S. Code § 9401(3), unless superseded by subsequent presidential action or congressional legislation. The executive order does not require changes to previously issued regulations, presidential actions, contracts or funding documents and other historical documents. The Assistant to the President for Science and Technology must, within 60 days, submit legislative language to the President to establish a federal definition for Super Intelligence, including assessing whether to amend or replace the current statutory definition and proposing corresponding amendment recommendations.
The executive order requires federal agencies to switch to Super Intelligence and to submit legislative recommendations for a federal definition within a deadline; readers can use this to understand the U.S. government's administrative direction on AI terminology and definitions.
