Understanding and avoiding AI failures: a practical guide

Drawing on normal accident theory, high reliability theory and open systems theory, the researchers construct a framework for understanding the risks of AI applications. The framework also incorporates AI safety principles to quantify the unique risks brought by increases in AI intelligence levels and human-like traits. The study does not seek root causes of accidents but focuses on system properties as accidents approach, and accordingly identifies the safety aspects that contemporary AI systems should focus on.
