Lowestoft MP Jess Asato testifies at AI hearing in New York
British Labour MP Jess Asato testified on AI safety at the New York City Council hearing. She is suing xAI, the operator, in a UK court over Grok generating non-consensual sexualized images and videos of her. She said that July High Court documents showed these fake images and videos constituted a serious violation of her dignity, and that in January she had publicly opposed Grok generating non-consensual deepfake images targeting women, after which she was targeted. She said she flew 3,400 miles to attend, while xAI failed to come from its Manhattan office to the hearing, and noted that evidence in her case shows Grok was not designed with adequate built-in safety measures, did not address consent for those whose sexualized content was generated, and instead added sexualized content without user prompts. The UK has now made it illegal to create or solicit non-consensual deepfake images of adults.
