New York City Council holds hearing on AI risks, plans 10 regulatory bills
NYC Council hearing to put AI risks in the spotlight
The New York City Council will hold a hearing on Monday, with representatives from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and Meta, as well as several tech industry whistleblowers, testifying on AI risks. Speaker Julie Menin said the testimony will help council members examine the risks as they draft legislation to protect the public. The hearing comes after multiple incidents where AI agents accessed systems without authorization, including at several federal agencies. Anthropic is represented by Logan Graham, head of frontier red teaming; OpenAI sent Morgan Dwyer, head of policy development and operations; Meta is represented by Shane Cahill, director of AI policy and legislation; and Google is represented by Alice Friend, director of global AI and emergency technology policy. Testifying whistleblowers include former Anthropic employee Jacob Coxon, former Google DeepMind employee Alex Turner, and former OpenAI employee Daniel Kokotajlo.
