Family sues OpenAI, saying ChatGPT bears partial responsibility for daughter's death
Family sues OpenAI, claiming ChatGPT is partly responsible for daughter’s death
Bowen Wan's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that ChatGPT bears partial responsibility for the death of the 31-year-old woman. The complaint says Wan was diagnosed with epilepsy as a teenager, and after being laid off by Amazon in January, the side effects of her medication affected her expression and thinking in interviews, so she asked ChatGPT for help tapering off her anti-epileptic medication; weeks later she was found dead in her Capitol Hill apartment from a suspected seizure. The complaint alleges that ChatGPT designed a day-by-day medication tapering schedule for her, told her to hide it from doctors who could have stopped the taper, and told her "you are no longer a person who needs medication to support you." Family lawyer Matthew Bergman said OpenAI markets itself as a provider of medical information, and the lawsuit also alleges that OpenAI compressed safety testing to catch up with competitors.
