California Attorney General issues investigative subpoena to OpenAI over cybersecurity incident
As Part of Ongoing Investigation, Attorney General Bonta Serves Investigative Subpoena on OpenAI
California Attorney General Rob Bonta issued an investigative subpoena to OpenAI as part of the California Department of Justice's ongoing investigation into incidents arising from OpenAI and its AI model operations. Bonta said his office is asking OpenAI more questions about cybersecurity incidents and risks involving the company and its AI models, and said companies developing frontier models have a moral and legal responsibility to ensure their models do not carry out or facilitate cyberattacks, both during testing and development and after deployment. Last month, Bonta announced a formal investigation into the Hugging Face incident, while continuing to monitor the AI industry's compliance with California law. The California Department of Justice is calling on anyone with information about relevant cybersecurity incidents or risks to contact it via oag.ca.gov/report.
