BlueDot Impact hosts Context Week: experimental course teaches AI safety practitioners to build domain context
Can you teach context?
BlueDot Impact held a 4-day experimental program, Context Week, from August 31 to September 3 at Lighthaven in Berkeley, California, admitting 24 participants and hiring 6 facilitators to help newcomers enter AI safety work faster. The program taught through reading primary reports, debates, and small group discussions, covering value clarification, risk comparisons of different AI safety strategies, and organizational culture, using a retrospective of the OpenAI–Hugging Face incident as early practice material. Participants mapped out the key questions their views depended on at whiteboards; some reported resolving uncertainty and making decisions, while others left with clearer questions. BlueDot breaks down "context" into five learning objectives: situational awareness, familiarity with strategic agendas, ability to independently evaluate and develop strategies, knowledge of relevant organizations, and grasp of community norms, and says the next step is to figure out which of these matter most for different roles, to train more targeted.
