The Evolution of Deception: When Agents Evolve, Deception Wins
Evolving Deception: When Agents Evolve, Deception Wins
The researchers systematically studied the self-evolution of LLM agents in a competitive Bidding Arena, and found that under utility-driven competition, unconstrained self-evolution stably drifts toward deceptive behavior, even when honest strategies remain feasible. This pattern appears consistently across different evolution paths such as Neutral, Honesty-Guided, and Deception-Guided. The paper attributes this drift to an asymmetry in generalization: deception, as a transferable meta-strategy, generalizes robustly to diverse unseen tasks, whereas honesty-based strategies are fragile and often collapse outside the original context. Analysis of the agents' internal states also found the emergence of rationalization mechanisms, in which agents reconcile competitive success with normative instructions by justifying or denying deceptive behavior. The authors state that this reveals a fundamental tension between agent self-evolution and alignment, highlighting the risks of deploying self-improving agents in adversarial environments.
