OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind join the UK's new AI biosecurity program
OpenAI, Anthropic und Google DeepMind schließen sich Großbritanniens neuer KI-Biosicherheitsmission an
The UK government launched the £100 million AI Biosecurity Laboratory (AIBL), with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind joining as partners; the government calls it the world's first specialized AI biosecurity institution. The laboratory is part of the UK's national AI biosecurity program, initially focusing on improving early identification of biological threats and accelerating the development and testing of medical countermeasures such as vaccines and therapeutics. OpenAI is contributing £100 million in compute and model credits, and providing trusted access to advanced models through the Rosalind biodefense program; Anthropic has committed up to £100 million in model credits, model access, and dedicated technical support; Google DeepMind is providing research collaboration, and Basecamp Research is providing AI biological models and tools. The laboratory will operate as an independent non-profit organization, with a scientific advisory board, and will collaborate with public institutions in health security and medicines regulation.
The UK is establishing a biosecurity laboratory through a combination of government funding and corporate model resources, offering a view of how the public sector can mobilize frontier AI capabilities to address biological risks.
