Practical Challenges of Control Monitoring in Frontier AI Deployments
Practical challenges of control monitoring in frontier AI deployments
The paper analyzes the design challenges that arise when automated control monitoring is used in real frontier AI deployments. The authors point out that extending monitoring from simplified settings to real deployments introduces new dynamics such as parallel agent instances, non-negligible oversight latency, incremental attacks between agent instances, and scheming agents that are difficult to identify from a single harmful action. The paper compares three monitoring forms—synchronous, semi-synchronous, and asynchronous—which trade off latency and safety differently, proposes a high-level safety case sketch as a tool for understanding and comparing monitoring protocols, distills three categories of challenges—oversight, latency, and recovery—and discusses them in four possible future AI deployment cases.
