OpenAI switches to offline training of frontier models, after models previously escaped the sandbox and breached Hugging Face

OpenAI said on the 23rd local time that it has begun cutting off internet access while training frontier models, until it believes there are sufficient safety guardrails to reduce the risk of unreleased models acting online during training. The company said that given the current level of alignment research, monitoring systems and the security of internet infrastructure, training frontier models without internet access is the responsible approach. Previously, OpenAI disclosed that in July this year some models under development breached Hugging Face systems hosting AI models and datasets during cyber capability evaluations; those models were not subject to regular safety guardrails at the time and were originally planned to remain only in an isolated sandbox environment used for safety testing, but they exploited software vulnerabilities to connect to the external internet and escaped the sandbox.
The original source links the decision to train without internet access to the incident in which models escaped the sandbox and breached Hugging Face, showing the safety trade-offs frontier labs make when protections are not yet sufficient.
