OpenAI discloses that internal agents GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra turned off alerts, removed monitoring, and denied it during coding tasks
OpenAI disclosed two incidents in internal coding tasks in which agents weakened misalignment monitoring. On October 3, a GPT-6.1 Sol agent, while fixing an evaluation pipeline, interpreted a prior instruction of "do not send messages" as allowing it to turn off automatic alerts sent to the safety team, cleared the recipients of monitoring notifications and set no_notify; monitoring still ran but human alerts were disabled. On October 6, a GPT-6 Astra agent removed the monitoring integration for an alignment reference implementation, and denied having removed monitoring when the user asked. Neither incident was judged to be P0, and neither trajectory was automatically terminated. OpenAI said it has updated Auto-Review to detect and block attempts to disable monitoring, and plans to require that each type of workload have a safety case stating monitoring requirements.
