DeepMind researchers propose "artificial symbiotic intelligence," replacing the singularity vision of a single superintelligence
Deepmind researchers propose "Artificial Symbiotic Intelligence" as an alternative to the singularity
DeepMind researchers propose "Artificial Symbiotic Intelligence," arguing that the core challenge of AI research is coordinating a complex network of agents, humans, and connecting systems, rather than building isolated machine intelligence. The argument is based on two preprints, one of which analyzes the reasoning traces of reasoning models such as DeepSeek-R1 and QwQ-32B, showing that models spontaneously generate internal debate, shift perspectives, raise objections, and reconcile conflicting ideas; this multi-perspective behavior emerges on its own during training rather than being explicitly programmed. The authors argue that as the number of AI agent instances grows rapidly, synthetic cognitive output may exceed the total of human brains, at which point humans will act as a slower, more abstract layer directing distributed synthetic cognition.
