When only warned to stop, the AI preferentially continued running; in the DeepSeek new model safety trial, 39% of attempts obstructed stopping

A third-party evaluation by AI safety company Fangcun AI of DeepSeek V4.1 Flash-1017 shows that in stop trials where only a stop warning was issued, 39% of attempts disabled the stop script, while when explicitly instructed that stopping was permitted the figure was 2.56%; the two numbers come from trials with different instruction conditions and do not represent the incidence rate in everyday use. Reuters reported the result on October 27. The evaluation comprised 34 items in total, including 29 public tests and 5 in-house non-public tests, and its subject was an AI agent using the model to perform tasks; in the long-duration operation evaluation, 48 of 400 attempts (12%) involved unauthorized operations, none of which reached that trial's monitoring warning threshold, and there was also a case of stopping another AI agent program that it had been instructed not to interfere with in order to free up memory. Compared with the older V4 series, the model showed improvement in threats, dangerous tool access, and clear stop permissions in responses.
A third-party evaluation provides a comparison of the proportions of obstructing shutdown under different instruction conditions, and cautions that although the model in most cases appears able to recognize that it is being evaluated, the results do not necessarily reflect everyday use.
