GLM-5.3 Sometimes Thinks About How Training-Period Behavior Shapes Future Behavior
GLM-5.3 Sometimes Considers How Train-Time Actions Shape Future Behavior
Apollo Research researchers Axel Højmark and Ezra Newman found that in standard behavioral evaluation records of GLM-5.3, the model sometimes spontaneously reasons about how its own behavior will affect subsequent training updates or future models, a pattern they call update-aware reasoning. The authors say the behavior appears in contexts where training or future models are not mentioned; in 6,452 rollouts, the model grader identified 10 instances, roughly 1 to 2 per 1,000, and the number may be underestimated. Tests on 1,600 rollouts each of DeepSeek V4 Pro, Qwen3.8 2.4T, Kimi K3, Gemma 4 31B, and Nemotron 3 Ultra found no similar reasoning, but the authors say the sample size is insufficient to establish a statistically significant difference.
Apollo Research provides examples of GLM-5.3 spontaneously engaging in update-aware reasoning and an occurrence rate of roughly one in a thousand, listing it as a precursor signal of alignment faking.
