UK government announces establishment of AI Biosecurity Lab (AIBL)
The UK government announced the establishment of the AI Biosecurity Lab (AIBL) under the National AI Biosecurity Initiative, supported by £100 million in government funding and up to £200 million in combined corporate commitments from OpenAI and Anthropic; the UK side calls it the world's first dedicated AI biosecurity institution. AIBL will operate as an independent non-profit organization, modeled similarly to the AI Security Institute, with the mission of using frontier AI to improve understanding, prevention, detection and response to biological threats; initial priorities include earlier detection of emerging biological threats and accelerating the development of medical countermeasures such as vaccines and therapeutics. AIBL will work with UKHSA, APHA, Dstl and the life sciences sector, and partner with MHRA to respond to health emergencies.
