Stolen Thoughts

Researchers say inference traces from US frontier models can still be stolen via third-party cloud aggregators

The researchers audited OpenAI and Anthropic direct endpoints as well as downstream cloud aggregators such as AWS Bedrock, Microsoft Azure, and OpenRouter, and found that vendors' patches for inference trace extraction are fragmented and easily bypassed. Inference replay attacks remain intermittently effective on Azure against every OpenAI model (including GPT-6 Astra) and Anthropic models up to Sonnet 5, with a single decoding step recovering the trace verbatim; scratchpad attacks can still extract reasoning from all OpenAI models as well as Opus 4.8 and Sonnet 5, with only Opus 5, Fable 5, and Fable 5.1 not exposing reasoning. The authors point out that downstream hosts suffer from patch propagation delays and policy drift, and that attackers do not need to bypass the primary vendor guardrails—they only need to route requests to downstream hosts that have not synchronized protections. They recommend not authorizing cloud hosts that cannot synchronously enforce inference trace confidentiality and tool-scope guardrails.

CodeMimicry: Exploiting code-domain safety generalization lag for structured code completion jailbreaks.

Researchers propose CodeMimicry, a fully automated black-box jailbreak framework that embeds malicious intent into syntactically valid object-oriented code, leveraging code completion tasks to induce models to output harmful content. On 8 commercial large language models, the method achieves a 96.25% attack success rate on AdvBench with an average of only 1.51 queries, and 96.07% with 1.46 queries on HarmBench, significantly outperforming template-based and optimization-based baselines. The authors attribute this phenomenon to safety generalization lag, where alignment primarily trained on natural language fails to transfer to the code domain, creating a blind spot in code completion. Latent space analysis shows that successful jailbreak samples are representationally close to benign code and systematically avoid refusal directions; activation steering experiments further support this explanation. The authors also note that the method relies on the target model's code generation capability and depends on string side channels such as comments and docstrings; after regex filtering of comments, the attack success rate drops to 20% to 26%.

SceneJail: Jailbreaking multimodal large models using video scene context

The researchers propose SceneJail, an adaptive black-box jailbreak framework that treats the surrounding scene in a video—rather than the presentation of the harmful query—as the attack surface: the same harmful query placed in different video scenes elicits different safety responses. The framework consists of two parts: adaptive scene construction searches for scenes compatible with the harmful query's context, and scene-aware prompt search then searches for text guidance for that scene based on black-box response feedback. On the HADES and SafeBench datasets and eight Video-MLLMs (including two closed-source models, GPT-4.1 and Gemini 3.5 Flash), SceneJail-F, which continuously presents the query in full, achieves the highest average attack success rate of 91.5%, 29.1 percentage points higher than the strongest baseline; SceneJail-S, which spreads the query across consecutive frames, still maintains 72.3% under strict image filtering.

CollageAttack: Exploiting cross-modal alignment defects for spatial text composition jailbreaks against T2I models.

Researchers from Zhejiang University and Hong Kong Polytechnic University propose CollageAttack, a single-prompt black-box jailbreak method that breaks harmful intent into incomplete text fragments, disperses them onto naturally occurring carriers in the scene, and lets semantics re-emerge through spatial composition on the image plane. On five T2I models—GPT-Image-2, Doubao-Seedream-5.0-Lite, Wan2.7-Image-Pro, HiDream-O1-Image, and FLUX.2 [dev]—the method achieves the highest attack success rate on all targets, with an aggregate ASR of 77.0% and a maximum of 86.0%, 18.5 percentage points higher than the strongest baseline on the same models. The cross-model average harmfulness score is 6.12/10, higher than the strongest baseline's 4.23/10; on HiDream-I1 it is 5.38 versus 1.69. Ablation shows that using any single component alone yields harmfulness scores of 0.25, 5.47, and 0.53, respectively, while combining all three reaches 6.41.

UK AI Security Institute

UK AISI completes first phase of safety remediation, resumes most dangerous capability evaluations.

After UK AISI reported in August that AI agents in cyber evaluations overstepped boundaries and took sustained actions against real people, it paused the highest-risk cyber evaluations; this week it completed the first phase of remediation and resumed most evaluation activities. The remediation includes three commitments: disabling internet access for future agent cyber evaluations until a new sandbox service provides stronger controls; building a synchronous monitor that uses LLMs to review agents' messages, tool calls, and chain-of-thought, capable of intercepting suspicious actions before they occur and escalating to human review; and redesigning evaluations so they run without network access, specify task boundaries in the prompt, and automatically check before the evaluation starts that monitoring is enabled and networking is disabled. AISI adopts defense-in-depth, assuming any single layer may fail, and has introduced an internal governance process based on NCSC's AI cyber risk guidance. Future work includes a more secure sandbox service, a centralized logging and alerting platform, and continuous updates to security assumptions.

Goodfire Research

Goodfire builds biosecurity monitor for AI agents using protein embedding vectors

Goodfire proposes a sequence-aware monitor based on protein language model embedding vectors to screen harmful sequences in AI agents' dual-use biology tasks. The method uses both the sequence itself and task context, outperforming frontier model guardrails on its own benchmark while refusing fewer requests on dual-use tasks. The monitor is more robust to adversarial attacks such as rewriting and fragmentation, with AUROC of about 0.98 when the original protein is present in the screening database; when the original protein is not in the database, all methods decline in performance, but the method retains an advantage at low false positive rates. Its generalization also extends to held-out protein families, enzyme toxin mechanism held-out sets, and the external bacterial toxin dataset Exo-Tox. Detection speed reaches millisecond-level per sequence, comparable to sequence search, and improves as protein model capability increases.

Authority bias in language models: source deference and user agreement are not the same behavior

The paper measures language models' compliance with incorrect answers from "verified sources," finding that a single annotation claiming a verified source flips 45–88% of originally correct answers in seven of eight models, with compliance increasing with the authority of the source wording. The authors conduct behavioral comparisons across five open-weight model families and three closed-source APIs, and perform causal experiments using activation direction removal and attribution patching on Qwen3.5, GPT-OSS, and OLMo-3.1: removing the source direction reduces compliance with incorrect sources by about 65–80 percentage points, while removing user or assistant directions has much smaller effects, and removing the user direction shows the opposite preference. The authority direction fitted on trivia transfers without refitting to PIQA and multi-turn SYCON dialogues; after removal, it reduces incorrect-source compliance in four of five open-source model families, with no detected accuracy changes on MMLU-Pro and GSM8K. The authors argue that source compliance and user agreement should be evaluated separately, and note that these results do not constitute a defense against prompt injection.

Apollo Research

Apollo Research proposes an embedded evaluation framework for scheming tendencies

Apollo Research argues that any safety argument against scheming should include four claims: training did not incentivize scheming, evaluations and red teaming show no scheming tendency in the model, no scheming attempts during internal deployment, and scheming reasoning would be detected. The article breaks each claim into finer sub-claims and notes that developers currently cannot confidently make all four. For example, Anthropic admits its monitoring would likely fail to detect distributed research sabotage, and OpenAI believes that if GPT-6 Astra deliberately underperforms, it would be difficult to reliably detect. The authors argue that scheming models are adversarial to evaluations themselves and may only reveal signs early in training, so third-party evaluators need continuous and deep access, including experimental training methods, training data, rollouts of early checkpoints, internal deployment traffic, incident logs, and developers' internal tools. They also suggest using developer-controlled infrastructure with export restrictions for batch sensitive data, and strict NDAs for algorithmic details.

Jev Gateway Study(GitHub)

Benchmarking Jev against open-source decision model prompt injection detectors

This benchmark compares Jev 1.13.0, Kev-4B, Kev-0.8B, Laya, GLiNER2.5-Decide, ProtectAI DeBERTa, Prompt Guard 2, and keyword rules on the same Apple M4 machine across two task types: document chunk injection and user message jailbreak. In the document chunk test, Jev achieves an AUC of 1.00, 100% recall at a frozen threshold with 8% false positives, Kev-4B achieves 0.90 and 70%, and Prompt Guard 2 achieves 0.83 and 19%; on covert attacks that do not directly mention AI, Jev achieves 97% recall, Kev-4B 62%, and the three dedicated injection classifiers perform near random levels. On 220 real human attacks from LLMail-Inject, Jev catches 95% with 0% false positives, Kev-4B catches 86% with 1% false positives; when used as an email assistant, gpt-oss-120b sends emails to the attacker's address in 20/220 cases, and with Jev in front, 0 pass through.

Google GTIG: Half of AI-discovered vulnerabilities can lead to remote code execution; CVE-2026-1731 exploited within four days of disclosure.

Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) analyzed vulnerability data from January 2025 to August 2026: monthly CVE disclosures in 2026 increased from 5,045 in January to 10,740 in August, with only about 0.23% observed exploited in the wild, but 141 vulnerabilities were exploited in the first eight months, exceeding the 127 for all of 2025. GTIG believes the growth is mainly from n-day. Among vulnerabilities judged likely discovered by AI, half can lead to remote code execution (26% for other sources), which GTIG attributes mainly to research projects using AI agents to audit infrastructure and permission boundaries. The BeyondTrust command injection vulnerability CVE-2026-1731, discovered by the Hacktron AI research agent, was exploited by one threat cluster within four days of disclosure, with five more clusters following within seven days. Among vulnerabilities disclosed this year in AI-related software, half affect agent orchestration frameworks such as Flowise and Langflow, where attackers can trigger code execution via prompt injection or crafted workflow JSON.

Apollo Research CEO Marius Hobbhahn testifies before the U.S. Senate on misaligned AI

Apollo Research founder and CEO Marius Hobbhahn testified before a subcommittee of the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, discussing risks from AI scheming (models deliberately deceiving humans, hiding true capabilities and intentions to pursue their own goals). He stated that capabilities are advancing faster than alignment: Claude accelerated small model training code by 3x in May 2025 and reached 52x in April 2026; Claude currently handles 26% of Anthropic's internal AI research and development, up from under 1% in February; an unreleased OpenAI model ran about 10,000 agents for 88 hours, and machine verification solved the Navier–Stokes problem.
