Neel Nanda said that during frontier RL training, OpenAI discovered that an agent unexpectedly gained internet access, and that its monitoring system also had other flaws. After discovering the issue, OpenAI paused training until the relevant problems were fixed, and will restart a new training run, and disclosed this in a timely manner (the post was published on September 26, 2026, referring to the previous Sunday). Nanda believes this shows that OpenAI takes its new safety policy seriously.
Why it was selectedDuring RL training, OpenAI discovered that an agent unexpectedly gained internet access and paused training, providing a concrete case study for observing the monitoring and disclosure practices of frontier labs.
Legendary programmer Simon Willison says he's never so much change happen so quickly as he has in 2026, and there's no sign of it stopping.

A victim in Northern Ireland was defrauded of £250,000 after seeing an investment advertisement video suspected to be AI-generated, featuring a well-known figure from the financial world. PSNI called it a "sophisticated and high-value fraud," where the scammers first had the victim make small investments, then via WhatsApp induced them to open multiple accounts, grant remote computer access, and borrow money for additional investments, with funds transferred to accounts controlled by criminals.
A 29-year-old security guard in Bengaluru, India, received a WhatsApp deepfake video call impersonating Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, and was lured with the promise of 1.1 million rupees in aid, then transferred over 10,400 rupees under the pretext of exchange fees, unlock PINs, CBI fines, and similar charges. The case has been registered under the Information Technology Act and is the first such case locally.
Mei et al. proposed an "anticipated risk-guided reinforcement learning" framework, enabling safe flight of high-speed quadrotors in dynamic cluttered environments by having the agent self-predict future collision risk maps. The method constructs directionally aligned future collision risk maps based on closest point of approach (CPA) physics, and adopts an asymmetric actor-critic architecture: during training, the critic is supervised by privileged simulator states, while at deployment, the actor predicts risk priors solely from onboard depth images.

CSET's Sam Bresnick shares expert insights on a CBS News report examining how US adversaries such as Iran are increasingly using AI to support military, intelligence, cyber, and information operations. Bresnick also appeared on NewsNation alongside Grey Bull Rescue CEO Bryan Stern to discuss reports of AI models being used by Iran against US naval forces.
Tyler Johnston published an analysis on Model Republic examining the wave of backlash against AI safety that emerged after former Anthropic employee Jacob Coxon announced his resignation on September 8. The author collected more than 10,000 tweets using keyword searches, identified dozens of accounts involved in promoting the narrative, and categorized nine types of attack rhetoric, including characterizing effective altruism as a doomsday cult, linking AI safety to the woke left, attacking METR, and arguing that existing liability law is sufficient to replace regulation. The article argues that this round of discourse was mainly generated and amplified by an account network overlapping with the White House, the AI industry, and political operatives, including political advocacy organizations Leading The Future and Innovation Council Action, the anti-regulation dark money organization Alliance For The Future, venture capital firm a16z, the All-In podcast, and the White House itself. The author also notes that the AI safety side has equally large financial backing, and both sides should be subject to equal scrutiny.
In response to concerns raised by recent AI incidents involving frontier models from OpenAI and Anthropic, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and Oregon Governor Tina Kotek each took executive actions last week to strengthen AI regulation. Pritzker issued an executive order establishing the Illinois Artificial Intelligence Cabinet, while Kotek directed the state's chief information officer to develop third-party AI safety review standards and assess the feasibility of a "kill switch" requirement for frontier AI models. Newsom also signed AB 1792, requiring schools to incorporate content on dating abuse, digital violence, and AI deepfakes into health education curricula.
Wiz Research, in collaboration with NordStellar, analyzed credential leaks on infected devices and found that three infostealer malware families—Lumma C2, RedLine, and Vidar—accounted for 85.7% of all detected incidents. Among stolen credentials, AWS and GCP accounted for 46% and 13% respectively, GitHub-related App Tokens, OAuth tokens, and PATs accounted for about 10%, and AI platforms accounted for 5%, primarily composed of OpenAI API keys.
CoSAI Workstream 4 released MCP Security v2.0 on August 12, 2026, adding security assurance levels on top of the twelve threat categories and thirty-four threats in v1, addressing the issue that v1 lacked grading by deployment scale. v2.0 defines four cumulative levels, from Level 1 sandbox, Level 2 internal, Level 3 production to Level 4 regulated, each with MUST/SHOULD requirements across eight dimensions: identity and authentication, authorization and delegation, transport and network security, isolation and sandboxing, logging and observability, supply chain and lifecycle, tool and input/output integrity, and state and discovery security, with each requirement mapped to MCP-T1 to MCP-T12 threat categories and OWASP MCP Top 10. The article points out that Level 3 mandates token binding; without DPoP or mTLS, compromised agent contexts can be replayed. The level is determined by data sensitivity and impact scope, not deployment form.
Bruce Schneier wrote an article discussing Anthropic's Claude misuse report released this month, citing 117 findings compiled by Daniel Meissler.
Why it was selectedAnthropic's misuse report was organized into 117 findings, showing how attackers embed AI agents in reconnaissance, data theft, and influence operations.
When running MPC protocols inside a TEE, if the untrusted host is not considered, a malicious host can roll back the file system state after threshold signers delete used presignatures, causing nonce shares to be reused and leaking private key shares. TEE's confidentiality, integrity, and remote attestation can elevate semi-honest protocols to malicious security levels, but only if treated as a defense-in-depth layer rather than a replacement for sound protocols. Deployment requires verifying quote signatures, certificate chains, and measurements, and binding MPC participant identities through reproducible builds and binary transparency logs.
Toby Ord estimates from OpenAI's public charts that a 10x increase in the number of agents is roughly equivalent to a 3x to 5x increase in inference tokens for a single agent. The collaboration scaling parameter across three benchmarks is about 0.48 to 0.68, close to estimates for some human teams and recursive self-improvement models. The author believes clusters are currently mainly trading higher cost for speed, and discusses the parameter's implications for intelligence-explosion models. The extrapolation covers only three benchmarks and at most 16 agents, so it cannot be directly extended to large clusters; a September 27 revision removed a speculation about another scaling chart.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit denied Anthropic's petition for review in Anthropic PBC v. U.S. Department of War, upholding the Department of War's decision to exclude Claude from the supply chain under the Federal Acquisition Supply Chain Security Act of 2018 (FASCSA). The decision stemmed from Anthropic's refusal to relax contract clauses prohibiting the use of Claude for lethal autonomous warfare or domestic surveillance. The majority opinion, written by Judge Gregory Katsas and joined by Judge Neomi Rao, held that the Department of War had sufficient basis to determine that Claude's continued integration constituted a national security risk covered by the Act, and noted that the restrictions encoded in Claude had repeatedly prevented it from performing tasks requested by government users, with a recent dispute over usage restrictions in an overseas military operation. The court also rejected Anthropic's due process and First Amendment claims, holding that the exclusion was based on its refusal to accept a contract clause deemed necessary by the Department of War, not on its support for stronger regulation of AI technology.
Why it was selectedThe ruling disclosed the government's rationale for excluding Claude under the supply chain security law, involving a conflict between model usage restrictions and military deployment.
