On September 23, Anthropic claimed that its large language model Claude discovered an enzyme system ART (array-associated reverse transcriptases) with properties "reminiscent of Crispr." About 950 Claude agents ran in parallel for 21.5 hours scanning genome databases, and from over 200,000 candidate reverse transcriptases, they screened out a new family containing long repeat sequences. Physical experiments on this system appear only in a technical report that has not undergone peer review.
In her new book "Biowar," Annie Jacobsen does not discuss AI, because she believes that scientists today can alter nature and trigger extinction-level disasters with genetic engineering alone. She points out that the barrier to entry for biological weapons is extremely low, "almost anyone can obtain potential pandemic pathogens," making them more likely than nuclear weapons. The article cites Anthropic's abuse report published this month, stating that foreign researchers five times tried to bypass Claude's guardrails to ask "gain-of-function" questions; Anthropic refused to answer and banned the accounts, while acknowledging that such information could also be used to develop vaccines and drugs.
Open-source security tools worth watching in September 2026 include: Sift can scan passwords and API keys across local disks, Windows file shares, Active Directory, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, Slack, Jira, and Confluence; ToolHive runs MCP servers in containers under the Apache 2.0 license; Tencent Zhuque Lab's AI-Infra-Guard can identify services such as Ollama, vLLM, and ComfyUI, compare against more than 1,600 known CVEs, check MCP servers and agent skills, and run jailbreak evaluations on target models.
GitHub Security Lab researcher Kevin Stubbings built a mobile-app-focused AI audit workflow, taskflows, on top of the lab's open-source Taskflow Agent, and used it to discover and report more than 20 vulnerabilities in Android apps.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission is investigating several leading U.S. AI labs and the safety evaluation organization METR, focusing on potential harms from their technologies. An FTC official confirmed the investigation to Semafor, which was first reported by the New York Post. The investigation began earlier this year before an unreleased OpenAI model went out of control and breached the open-source AI platform Hugging Face, an incident that raised new concerns about the potential harms of unconstrained AI development. In addition to labs such as OpenAI and Anthropic, METR, a California-based nonprofit that evaluates risks of frontier AI models, is also under investigation; METR previously investigated and published a report on the OpenAI and Hugging Face breach. The FTC will issue civil investigative demands similar to subpoenas to these companies in the coming weeks.
Why it was selectedFTC
NIST released the initial public draft of SP 800-239, "AI Data Center Security Analysis: A High-Performance Computing-Driven Approach," on July 27, 2026; the public comment period ended on September 25. The draft implements the directive from the White House's July 2025 "Winning the Race: The U.S. AI Action Plan" requiring NIST, together with the Department of Defense, the intelligence community, and industry, to develop technical standards for high-security AI data centers. It was written by Yang Guo and Bennett Tomlinson of NIST's Computer Security Division.
Generative AI risks fall under "Knightian uncertainty" due to the lack of historical loss distributions, so insurers cannot offer any actuarially based rates and can only respond with exclusions rather than coverage. The generative AI exclusion endorsements CG 40 47, CG 40 48, and CG 35 08 introduced by ISO in January 2026 have been filed or adopted by more than 60 U.S. property insurance groups, and W.R. Berkley has proposed excluding "any actual or alleged AI use" in directors and officers, professional liability, and fiduciary liability insurance. AI-related litigation grew 978% between 2021 and 2025, while 45% of employees use AI on company devices, two-thirds of them through personal accounts invisible to IT, making it difficult for underwriters to determine what AI the insured is actually running.
OX Research discloses an account takeover vulnerability in LiteLLM, CVE-2026-93355 (CWE-290, CVSS 8.8), where an attacker can use a legitimately signed JWT to impersonate any existing user, including proxy_admin. LiteLLM is an open-source AI gateway that unifies proxying over 100 LLM APIs including OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure, Bedrock, and Vertex AI, and centrally stores upstream API keys, usage, and virtual keys.
Why it was selectedDisclosed an unpatched account takeover vulnerability in LiteLLM, and provided immediate temporary mitigations on the IdP side that can be implemented right away, for teams deploying this gateway to investigate.
OpenAI launches GPT-6.1 Sol, aimed at programming, computer operation, and professional work scenarios, with intelligence close to Astra. Its standard API input and output token prices are only one-fifth of Astra's.
Anthropic is launching a public research initiative through Anthropic Interviewer, collecting experiences people have had with AI and their demands of AI companies from the public. Participants can choose to make the full interview public, and it is not limited to being read by Anthropic.
This project continues a similar survey from last December—at that time, 81,000 people shared their hopes and concerns about AI, and the results influenced the research agenda of the Anthropic Institute and were presented at the World Economic Forum. What is publicly released this time is only the full text of the interviewees' interviews and their countries, without Claude account information such as names and email addresses. However, it still reminds that information such as age, occupation, and city may allow others to identify them, and suggests avoiding sharing such details.
Unit 42 open-sourced OperTraitor, an LLM-driven analysis engine that reads raw RBAC configurations from local Operator and OperatorHub catalogs, compares the differences between Operator documentation functionality and actually granted permissions, and gives a risk score of 1–10.
Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5, which the company says responds over 30% faster than Sonnet 5, consumes fewer tokens for most tasks, and lowers per-task cost while API pricing remains unchanged.
Palo Alto Networks expands its collaboration with NVIDIA to govern AI agent activity, network traffic, and identity management through the NVIDIA Open Agent Safety Platform reference design.
More than 100 security and compliance vendors have integrated with the Claude Compliance API, enabling Claude activity data to be fed into enterprises' existing monitoring tools, with CrowdStrike, Microsoft Purview, Splunk, Palo Alto Networks, Cloudflare, and Zscaler among them.
After the Trump-Xi summit, China and the United States announced the establishment of an "AI dialogue" and a "bilateral communication channel for AI incidents," with the next exchange expected around November, but neither side's statement addressed the two contentious issues of AI chip export controls and Chinese companies using distillation to replicate U.S. model capabilities.
