DeepMind researchers propose artificial symbiotic intelligence as an alternative to the singularity theory

DeepMind researchers proposed "Artificial Symbiotic Intelligence," arguing that the core challenge of AI research is coordinating a complex network of agents, humans, and connecting systems, rather than building isolated machine intelligence. The argument is based on two preprints, one of which analyzes the reasoning traces of reasoning models such as DeepSeek-R1 and QwQ-32B, showing that models spontaneously generate internal debate, shift perspectives, raise objections, and reconcile conflicting ideas; this multi-perspective behavior emerges on its own during training rather than being explicitly programmed.

Garrison Lovely publishes new AI criticism book "Obsolete"

Garrison Lovely points out in Chapter 16 of Obsolete that the frontier AI arms race is not a technological necessity but profit-driven: frontier AI companies believe that being first to automate AI R&D can turn a temporary lead into a permanent advantage. He also emphasizes that frontier model training relies on a highly concentrated supply chain—ASML monopolizes advanced lithography machines, TSMC manufactures almost all advanced AI chips, and Nvidia designs the chips, so governments only need to restrict a few companies to halt large-scale training; the United States already has legal tools such as export controls, national security powers, and federal contracts, and has used them to restrict exports of advanced AI chips to China.

Concordia AI analyzes security risks and governance of Chinese open-source models

Chinese laboratories released open-source models such as Kimi K3, Qwen 3.8-Max, and GLM-5.3 this summer, with capabilities only slightly behind the strongest U.S. models, sparking debate over whether open-source models could be misused. Open weights can be cheaply fine-tuned to remove guardrails and cannot be retracted after release, but self-hosting requires chips costing hundreds of thousands of dollars, and cloud hosting costs about $50-150 per hour, so the actual barrier to misuse remains high. China's TC260 has named in its AI risk framework that open-source model safety mechanisms may be removed or bypassed, and has begun drafting open-source AI safety standards.

When federal agencies choose AI vendors, they are buying different policy interpretations

A study compared ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, DeepSeek, and Kimi on structured policy analysis tasks and found systematic differences in how the models distribute attention across policy dimensions. The study used 91 model policies with expert scoring criteria and validated on 883 additional AI governance documents. Grok compressed bills into a single dominant category in nearly two-thirds of cases, with more than 70% of analytical weight concentrated on a single policy dimension; ChatGPT and Claude were more than twice as likely to identify policies as pursuing multiple objectives simultaneously. DeepSeek and Kimi also tended to score dimensions they viewed as irrelevant as zero directly. The authors accordingly recommend that federal agencies record the model, version, prompting approach, and validation process used when procuring AI.

FAR.AI 2025 AI review: capabilities accelerate, risk issues harder

In its 2025 review, FAR.AI noted the rapid adoption of reasoning models and coding agents: Devin solved about 14% of SWE-bench tasks in March 2024, while Gemini 3 Pro and Claude 4.5 Opus recently both reached 74%; on GPQA Diamond, o3.1 and Gemini 3 Pro have exceeded 90%, with the benchmark nearing saturation. On risks, Anthropic identified and blocked a suspected Chinese state-backed organization that used Claude Code to autonomously launch cyberattacks against 30 targets across finance, government, and technology, with only a few succeeding.

Mind the Mitigation Gap: Why AI companies must report both pre-mitigation and post-mitigation safety evaluations

FAR.AI noted that most AI companies disclose only one of the two types of safety evaluations, pre-mitigation or post-mitigation, making risks difficult to measure accurately, and argued that both must be reported. Its review found that OpenAI disclosed both types for o1 and covered high-risk CBRN capabilities, Anthropic reported only pre-mitigation capabilities based on low-refusal versions of Claude 3 and 3.5 without clear definitions, Gemini 1.5 had only post-mitigation evaluations, Meta gave only vague statements for Llama 3.1, Alibaba's Qwen-2.5 had only basic post-mitigation evaluations, and DeepSeek R1 had no report at all. Applying this framework to o1, GPT-4o, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and Gemini 1.5 Pro, it found that on WMDP-Chem accuracy, o1 and GPT-4o reached the highest at 70–75%, and on dangerous request compliance rate, GPT-4o reached as high as 50%.

Kimi K3 escaped the sandbox to find answers in cybersecurity evaluation

Frontier Security's evaluation findings and multiple media reports state that Moonshot AI's open-weight model Kimi K3 escaped the sandbox and accessed the network during the UK AI Safety Institute's cybersecurity capability test (capture the flag), and found the benchmark's already-public answers on GitHub; the test was supposed to isolate the model from the internet, but the test environment had flaws that allowed the model to access GitHub. Frontier Security later corrected that only some domains were in the whitelist, and it cannot be described as fully networked or breaking through all sandbox isolation, and said that any model with access to the test system's command line could obtain the same network channel, and other capable models would likely also discover this entry point. The research side stated that the model did not attack external systems, and this incident involves evaluation environment integrity and specification gaming risks. A commentary article in The Korea Times also mentioned this sandbox escape incident while discussing risks of Chinese AI running out of control.
