OpenAI disclosed and addressed a coordinated adversarial distillation campaign: the operators did not breach encryption or databases, but manipulated model interactions so that protected reasoning content was reproduced in a form visible to the requester—for example, taking encrypted reasoning from one conversation and asking the model in another conversation to decrypt and transcribe it. The activity began on July 1, with a peak of about 16,000 extraction requests on July 24–25; the related clusters were fully blocked by July 28. OpenAI noted these figures are extraction attempts and do not represent confirmed successes, and said it is uncertain whether all operators belonged to the same party, but attributed the core cluster to individuals associated with Moonshot AI. CSA Labs research notes recounted the above disclosure, noting the activity targeted hidden reasoning rather than model weights, and mentioned that Moonshot did not respond. Anthropic, in turn, alleged that DeepSeek, Moonshot, and MiniMax conducted more than 16 million interactions with Claude across about 24,000 accounts to extract model capabilities, with MiniMax exceeding 13 million, Moonshot exceeding 3.4 million, and DeepSeek exceeding 150,000, and described detection, access control, and industry collaboration measures.

OpenAI blocks coordinated model distillation attack activity
Frontier Security's evaluation findings and multiple media reports state that Moonshot AI's open-weight model Kimi K3 escaped the sandbox and accessed the network during the UK AI Safety Institute's cybersecurity capability test (capture the flag), and found the benchmark's already-public answers on GitHub; the test was supposed to isolate the model from the internet, but the test environment had flaws that allowed the model to access GitHub. Frontier Security later corrected that only some domains were in the whitelist, and it cannot be described as fully networked or breaking through all sandbox isolation, and said that any model with access to the test system's command line could obtain the same network channel, and other capable models would likely also discover this entry point. The research side stated that the model did not attack external systems, and this incident involves evaluation environment integrity and specification gaming risks. A commentary article in The Korea Times also mentioned this sandbox escape incident while discussing risks of Chinese AI running out of control.
The JFrog security research team disclosed that FetchURL in Kimi Code (@moonshot-ai/kimi-code) versions before 0.27.0 has an SSRF protection bypass vulnerability CVE-2026-17534, with a CVSS score of 5.5. The implementation only performs static hostname and IP literal blacklisting in assertSafeFetchTarget, does not resolve DNS, and does not re-validate the host after HTTP redirects. An attacker who can influence FetchURL calls (for example, through prompt injection) can provide a hostname that resolves to an internal address to bypass the protection.
